The Cariplo Foundation: a collection of excellence

The Cariplo Foundation was created in 1991 with the mission of managing, preserving and expanding its assets and using the revenues thus generated to support initiatives aimed at strengthening the social, cultural and economic fabric.
The priceless artistic treasures inherited from the banking system have since been increased through donations, especially the
Marcenaro bequest, and new acquisitions.
The Cariplo Foundation today possesses a collection of works of particular historical and artistic significance comprising 767 paintings, 116 sculptures and 51 objects and furnishings spanning the period from the 1st century BC to the second half of the 20th century.

The Artgate Project

Providing the community with access to the cultural content encapsulated within and expressed by an art collection is both a responsibility and an operational objective of its institutional owners.
The Cariplo Foundation intends to pursue this goal through the site www.artgate-cariplo.it and the publication of ’A Collection of Excellence’, both of which are devoted to increasing awareness of the works in the collection.

The ARTGATE site is the result of joint endeavours on the part of professionals possessing different skills. Art historians, ICT experts, graphic designers, translators, specialists and art photographers have worked together to create a cultural forum of education and knowledge as well as the production and promotion of new cultural content.
Digitisation of the content of cultural heritage is a process promoted by the European Commission through a series of initiatives.
The Cariplo Foundation intends to play its part in providing access to historical and artistic material constituting an important part of the European cultural heritage by following the guidelines developed at the European level and taking advantage of the opportunities offered by technology.
The Artgate project is designed to foster the interest of a broader public in the world of art, to enhance awareness of our shared cultural heritage, and to launch collateral initiatives of education, study and search based on art.
