Dated 1890, this small panel was purchased in 1986 and is part of a series of works on the theme of the urban view, executed between the second half of the 1880s and the beginning of the following decade. During a period of radical urban transformation, the painter fondly renders the bustling street life of Milan, from Via Torino to Corso di Porta Ticinese and the Darsena del Naviglio. Such views were featured in the works of other painters who, like Bianchi, trained in the school of Lombard Naturalism, especially Emilio Gola whose Washerwomen on the Naviglio is in the Cariplo Collection.

In Old Milan, an avenue and its buildings are enveloped in a misty, rain-filled atmosphere; the scene is brought alive by a passing group of people sheltering under umbrellas, while a cart drawn by a pair of horses crosses the road and, in the background, an omnibus marks the vanishing point of the perspective. The result is a convincing slice-of-life painting where the atmosphere and the light, caught as it reflects off the wet road and rendered with great skill, are obviously indebted to contemporary French painting.

From November 2011, the work has been on view at the Gallerie d’Italia in Milan.
