The group of six landscapes (Rovigno, Brioni or Landscape with Trees and Sea, Island of Brioni, Zara, Rovigno and Pola), all dating from 1924, was acquired in 1991 with the Istituto Bancario Italiano (IBI) Collection, which it entered from the Credito di Venezia e del Rio de la Plata Collection.

The inscription on the back states that the painting was executed in August 1924, like the other Rovigno in the Cariplo Collection. Both works depict the Istrian town, but they differ in approach, here the vista is broader and more sweeping, and in  interpretation of the landscape. Here the painter creates a compelling contrast between the expanse of brightly lit sea and the solid volume of the town perched on the hilltop and already in the dusk, thus bathing the image in a suspended atmosphere. The execution of many variants of the same subject, often from different angles and in various lights, is typical of Fonda’s modus operandi, which translates his rigorous analysis of reality into a synthetic and extremely emotional vision of landscape.

Istrian View (private collection) is also reminiscent of the two Rovigno paintings. It was shown in the pivotal retrospective held at the Castello di S. Giusto in Trieste, in spring 1979, which illustrated the artist’s career through over fifty works.
