Provenance: Milan, artist’s studio (1940)

The sculpture was purchased at the artist’s Milan studio in 1940, through the lawyer Mario Cunietti, Commissioner of the Board of Directors of the Cassa di Risparmio bank. This small bronze head of a boy with its sober modelling and convincing solid volumes, is stylistically very similar to Head of an Old Man executed the same year, now in the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Milan.

The work reflects the style associated with the second stage in Alberto Bazzoni’s career, namely the period from 1936 to 1940 when he moved from Milan to Paris. In the French capital, Bazzoni worked on small intimist sculptures, since he was no longer able to count on the commissions guaranteed by the Fascist regime years previously, when he had contributed a series of reliefs and some sculptural groups and medallions to the decoration of the ticket hall at Milan Central Station, which was opened in 1931. Later, he had executed the bas-relief in pink marble entitled The Fall of Lucifer for the Palazzo di Giustizia in Milan. The building itself was designed by the architect Marcello Piacentini in 1932 and completed in 1940, and artists such as Arturo Martini, Timo Bortolotti and Mario Sironi also worked on the decoration.

On his return to Italy following the outbreak of the Second World War, Bazzoni settled in Milan again. After re-establishing his ties with the regime, he was commissioned to execute various reliefs for the Palazzo dei Ricevimenti e dei Congressi in Rome, designed by Adalberto Libera for the district that was to host the Universal Exhibition of 1942 (the Cariplo Collection has two preparatory cartoons by Achille Funi depicting The Goddess Roma and The Roman Soldier, destined for the aforesaid building). The Second World War prevented the project from being completed and the reliefs were never executed.
