The work was purchased on the antique market in 1985 with the title Morning Lights on Lake Lugano and recent studies have enabled it to be identified as the painting Autumn Morning, displayed in 1892 at the annual exhibition of the Milan Società per le Belle Arti ed Esposizione Permanente. It was precisely during this period that Cavaleri, a self-taught painter, made his debut with landscapes and seascapes. Therefore, the work in the Collection can be considered an important example of his early landscape painting.

The inscription on the back of the stretcher makes it possible to identify the place depicted. It is Lake Lugano in the first light of dawn. Some peasant women, carrying baskets on their backs, have just arrived at the shore and are setting off towards the fields. The penumbra dominates the foreground and the high ground on the opposite shore of the lake, and only begins to lift towards the horizon where a warm autumn light brightens the sky.

The artist’s formation took place in the school of Lombard Naturalism from which he borrowed subjects, such as the Ticino and Como scenery, whose success was ensured, right from the beginning of his career. The Como landscape is in fact depicted in another work he showed in Milan in 1892, entitled Monte Grona at Breglia (Lake Como), which he reprised the following year in View of Gravedona on Lake Como (1893, Milan, Quadreria dell'Ospedale Maggiore). With respect to the latter, the work in the Cariplo Collection is characterised by a darker range of colours, pivoting on browns and accentuated by the pink priming on which the pigment is applied in flowing fields. Here, the young painter already displays confidence in conducting his luministic research, which in the following years he would develop by exploring material effects, such as those of pure light and colour, as can be seen in his later works, Morning in Liguria and From Miramare (Savona), in the Cariplo Collection.
