This painting, datable to the second half of the 1810s, depicts a view of the countryside in an unidentified place and has a compositional scheme that Migliara was subsequently to adopt several times. The sweeping vista with the foreground partially in shadow, thus accentuating the sense of perspectival depth, is created by combining a real landscape with imaginary elements in a descriptive style deriving from Flemish art.

The narrative unfolds from one detail to the next, through a number of perspective planes: from the ancient walls with a fountain where a dog is drinking, to the column, the mill, the washerwomen, then to the line of horses coming from the river and crossing the road and to the bridge in the distance.

Migliara repeatedly addressed rural subjects often in the picturesque style of the genre scene in paintings of local festivals, processions and horse fairs that were very popular with the public and whose iconography was a considerable success.

From November 2011, the work has been on view at the Gallerie d’Italia in Milan.
