This painting can be dated to the last decade of the 19th century, a period in which the artist pursued his researches in painting from life in the field of landscape painting, executing both large-scale views such as Quiet (1891, private collection) and The Evening Bell (Trieste, Museo Revoltella ) exhibited in Rome in 1893 and in Vienna the following year, and small impressions painted in a freer style, like Lagoon in the Cariplo Collection. Towards the end of the century and in the years that followed he departed from naturalism and in works like The Survivors (Rome, Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna) or The Wait, given together with a Seascape to the secretary of the Venice Biennale, Antonio Fradeletto, (both in private collections), he interprets themes of Symbolism translating them into a painting style not devoid of Divisionist influences. Lagoon can be considered a work that precedes this phase, the fruit of his still lively response to the Venetian landscape. The few groups of houses in the background mark the horizon dividing the slightly veiled sky from the waters of the lagoon, on whose surface the painter has created a play of light and reflection that can also be found in other works such as Landscape with Boats, datable to the last quarter of the 19th century (Milan, Collezione Intesa San Paolo), and also in Guglielmo Ciardi’s seascapes, who was with Fragiacomo among the leading Veneto landscapists of the period.
