In January 1953 the Cassa di Risparmio delle Provincie Lombarde commissioned from the painter Augusto Colombo a portrait of Count Stefano Jacini, president of the Cassa di Risparmio delle Provincie Lombarde from 1946 to 1952, the year he died.

The painting rounded out the portrait gallery that the bank had been building up since the 1920s to celebrate its highest officials. The fact that the Cassa di Risparmo chose Colombo, who had actually put himself forward, was possibly linked to its long relationship with the artist, which had begun in 1924 when he won the Cesare Sarfatti grant, and donated the painting The Siesta to the bank, as a sign of his gratitude.

The portrait was probably executed from a photograph: the three-quarter pose and the illustrated volume are, in fact, elements characteristic of the photographic studio portrait, which in the 1950s was still being executed according to conventional canons to satisfy the needs of a traditional clientele. The likeness of the sitter is diligently rendered. He is portrayed against a neutral background, and in a deliberately essential style, to bring out his personality.  In actual fact, Jacini was known in the political and civil world for his gifts as a moderate and a skilled diplomat, which led to his appointment as Minister for War in the Ferruccio Parri government during the Second World War, and subsequently as a member of the Constituent Assembly and Italian Ambassador to Argentina.
