Between the second half of the 1980s and 1994, at a time when critics were showing a renewed interest in the works of Eugenio Gignous, three of his paintings entered the Cariplo Collection: Landscape with Pond, Seascape and Ligurian Seascape.

This painting that depicts a stretch of the Riviera Ligure di Levante coast is skilfully constructed employing a composition recurrent in the artist’s oeuvre, which uses diagonals and a line in the middle dividing the canvas into two sections. The righthand section is entirely taken up by the cliff, houses and vegetation, while on the left lies the open sea with sails in the distance, which accentuate the deep perspective.

In his vast output of landscape painting, Gignous began to paint seascapes occasionally in 1874 and, from 1880 to 1882, produced a homogeneous group of canvases depicting the Ligurian resort of Varigotti.

The painting in the Collection, however, dates from the last decade of the century and hence is a late work by this artist, who is now recognised as the leading exponent of Lombard painting. Though always remaining faithful to the canons of Lombard Naturalism, Gignous explores the landscape between Sestri, Quarto and Nervi constantly renewing his means of expression. His adoption of broad, thick brushstrokes, which in this work appear alongside the delicate, transparent impastos of the sky and sea, brings the painter’s mature work closer to the researches conducted by Leonardo Bazzaro and Filippo Carcano in the same years.
