Shortly after the painter’s death on 3 November 1954, this work was shown together with two landscapes in the annual exhibition of the Milanese Società per le belle arti ed Esposizione Permanente, where it was purchased by the Cariplo.
Alongside the portraits and landscapes that had brought him commercial success and critical esteem ever since his debut, Mascarini worked from the first decade of the 20th century on a series of still-life works and interiors, including Oranges, presented in a show of Lombard watercolours at the Caffè Cova in 1913, Time for Work (1925), and Woman Ironing. Works of this type came to predominate in the 1940s, when the painter withdrew from the art scene after the last major solo show at the Società per le belle arti ed Esposizione Permanente, Milan, in 1942.
The work in the Cariplo Collection, which belongs to Mascarini’s late period, is distinguished by quick brushstrokes, simplified compositional structure, and meticulous description of every detail of the furnishings of this middle-class interior, easily identifiable as the sitting room of the apartment on Via Goldoni in Milan where the artist moved in 1922. The simple, intimate scene is barely animated by the presence of a woman engrossed in reading, one of the painter’s favourite subjects. The various versions produced from the 1910s on include Woman Reading (1913), Pause (1941), and the watercolour Interior (private collection), which resembles the Cariplo painting in its extreme compositional simplification and descriptive focus on the details of the setting.
